A long time ago a friend of mine was a Bartd janitor. One day he took me down to the east end of the platform at Embarcadero to show me where an associate of his had deonstrated throwing a large ball of steel wool onto the third rail. He said it was like a giant flashbulb, and when he showed me the spot, there was a large black sooty area on the tunnel wall. It's long gone.
