Interesting to learn that the McClatchy's were the lobbying force behind the outlawing of third rails in California unless they are completely fenced. An old timer told me about how he would jump up and stand on top of the Northern Electric's (Sacramento Northern)energized un-covered third rail when he was a kid. It was a "macho" thing to do.

I have heard about youngsters, somehow without getting electrocuted, wedging galvanized garbage can lids between the third rail and its cover board, then watching the "fireworks" when a train hits it.

I have long wondered when kids may get through the fence and try this same thing on B.A.R.T.
