BART's elevated structures have survived any number of moderate to severe earthquakes with nary a crack. The Cypress structure collapsed due to its great weight. Photos taken at the time show that the roadway fell straight down. The supports shattered due to the stress of a double-decked roadway that had been overlaid with tons of extra asphalt in an attempt to reduce the rollercoaster effect.
