A trench would be far more likely to create ghetto blight than an elevated structure. What engineering experts have stated that elevated structures are unsound or unsafe in an earthquake? Its time to stop quibbling about HSR and get on with it. Let the NIMBYs in Palo Alto pony up the cash for special walls, trenches, etc. If it can be made half as successful as BART it will be money well spent.
