BART elevateds have never been tested in a major quake. Loma Prieta was a piddling 13 seconds while 1906 was around 75 seconds. If you remember 1989 multiply it by 5 just in duration. I read one estimate of the 1700 quake as possibly 5 minutes long.

Besides what's so wrong with a ditch ala Alameda Corridor?

Looks like the whole concept is devolving anyway what with detours and added stops. You are going to compete with a plane and stop in Merced? You might just as well build a 125 mph upgrade of existing railways and fugeddaboutit.
