OK, Larry... I found more info...
Back in 1984 when SP 4449 was on it's on it's way going home to Portland from the World's Fair in New Orleans, the engine broke free from the tender out in Southwest (Texas? Or was it Arizona?) desert. While the train (with the tender) went into emergency, the engine didn't stop for a conciderable distance past where the train itself stopped. I think the cause of the engine/tender separation was the drawbar pin fell out because the pin's keeper gave way..... But I don't remember for sure. The hoses were the next thing to let go. The fuel cut off valve did its job and no oil was spilled, but the tender lost it's water.
Corrections, anyone ??
