The World's Fair Daylight - WOW - There's some memories in that title. On the trip down, Cajon & I fanned it in Tehachapi & Soledad Cyn. What a ZOO !!! We set up early @ Caliente, where the tracks loop up out of town & cross over Cal - Bodfish Rd. When others started to show up, we located everyone so no shots would be blocked; " vidiots " by themselves so they wouldn't pick us up in their mics. Of course the " Last - Minute - Louies " screwed that up. After that, we played our hunch & skipped the Loop,( it looked like Dodger Stadium's Parking lot ) skipped Tehachapi Depot & even Mojave too & set up @ Ansel siding. 3 hours later, the "Daylight" helpers (remember them ? ) went through, announcing the impending arrival of STEAM !!! Then some little $#!t walked right down to tracks' edge with a boombox to record the sounds of 50 plus people yelling at him to get out of our shots !!! I sure would like to know who he is; Cajon & I ( & 50 plus others ) want to play that tape at his impending funeral !!!
The return trip of 4449 was very different; Cajon & I rode Amtrak to Phoenix to ride 4449 back to Los Angeles, with an overnighter in fabulous Yuma !!! We formed the Vestibule 5 Club that weekend, taking turns with other riders in said doorway all the way back. I have memories of lotsa crappy shots ( some of them literally, what with the cars having " straight - shot " toilets ); I also remember consuming large quantities of Henry Weinhard's Beer, ( one of the official Oregon - made sponsors ) this still being some 3 months BEFORE my 21st birthday !!! My memory is a little clouded after the beer; I do remain friends, however, with Cajon, Curt, & Paul some 25 years later. Possibly the best memory of all !!!
