The separation occurred just west of the @#$%& River bridge at Amistad, the first siding west of Del Rio. The pin that fell out was immediately found because fans in the baggage car and all of the vestibules saw it bouncing down the right of way and immediately found it. At the time it happened there were no eastbound trains out of Sanderson or westbound trains past Hondo. The Worlds Fair Daylight was under way long before affecting any freight movements. The superintendent of the San Antonio Division, Art Henson, was on the train and calmly supervised the SP response to the situation. Art, later to be general manager of the Eastern Region of SP and ultimately Vice President - Transportation in Denver, typified the line leadership of SP that appreciated the accomplishments of the SP 4449 volunteers and supported its movements in ways never quantified by the bean counters. (thank goodness)
