Hey Bruce, we're a lot closer than you may believe. I was born @ St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, CA., & raised in Westminster & Villa Park. I recall you were from El Toro ??? If so, you probably remember such lost locations as Valencia & Kathryn, Richfield & Cooks Corner too.( I even bought my 1st Pentax K - 1000 @ the photo shop in CdA that you used to shop at, on The 4th of July no less, in 1995.)
Regarding the W.F. Daylight, yes the traffic & crowds were insane, though as a native SoCal freeway flyer I did alright in working my way through. When leaving Ansel siding I did decide to " gun it & go ", & ended up cutting off another foamer friend of mine !!! ( Sorry Rob ). While you were @ Vincent, Cajon & I were @ Tunnel 19 in Soledad Cyn, where we bagged some great down - on shots from the highway. I also remember on the ride home from Yuma, when the train stopped on the main @ West Colton Yard for a pilot crew change, all 8 lanes of the San Bernardino Freeway stopped too !!! Foamers using both sides of San Timeteo Cyn Rd too. Hey, this was a big deal; 25 years since big steam had operated in SoCal !!! What memories ...
