The 712 and 917 were often operated with no problems on that rail. The Green Bay & Western used to run Alco Centuries at 49mph on 75-pound rail, although I admit their track was better-maintained. Kennecott Copper 771 is as heavy as either of those diesels, but it's still there (but, of course, it's not a diesel) and it used to run quite a bit, too. While it's gratifying that the SN and Saltair 44-tonners came to RVJ, the 712 and 917 (and various other items) were purged because they were at odds with the ruling cabal, and never mind how much time and effort were put in by members who apparently were not on the A-Team. And I dare say that Portola came out way ahead on that deal, as they received other equipment as well, and the 44-tonners are a couple of far-gone junkers.
