Tim (SP4294) mentioned why not rent or lease an SP locomotive? Good question, this had been done in years prior. But this was now 1956, the last full year or SP steam. On January 1st, the SP was down to a total of 461 steam locos system wide and there were not the same lighter
examples available as in earlier years. The last remaining 4-8-0 (2914) had been taken off the roster around May of '55 and there were no longer any of the light 4-6-0 types around either, so the old choices of SP power were not there any more.
