At multi-track grade crossings, the S.P. used to warn motorists when a crossing was occupied by a train and a second train was approaching. There was a sign that lit up and said "TWO TRAINS." The sign was not visible unless it was lighted. In addition, a continuously ringing vibrating bell (like a burglar alarm) began to ring when the "TWO TRAINS" sign lit up. This would at least warn motorists to avoid darting over the crossing as soon as the first train cleared the crossing. Does anyone remember these? There used to be one at Jack London Square in Oakland where the track crossed Broadway.
I have always lamented the removal of these extra warning devices. Perhaps they could save more lives if their use was revived.
