According the news, the driver went around another car that was stopped at the crossing, then around the lowered gate. And also reported was that there had been a fright train (maybe two) in the crossing prior to the LRT coming along. A witness stated that those gates had malfunctioned a few times in the past and that his son had to lift the gate one time because of this. This was reported at the scene after the accident and I have no idea as to its accuracy.

I think they need quad gates at this site and center dividers about 100 feet either side. Sacramento has a BUNCH of these crossing types and the "open lane" is too much of an invite for some people.
