This sounds like an old trucker's tale because the uniflow design of Winton engines requires the Roots-blower pressurized airbox to clean out the cylinders when the ports and exhaust valves are open. The blower supplies something like 27% more air than is actually necessary for cleaning the exhaust gasses out of the cylinder. Nor would injection timing be correct (ATDC). It's a similar situation with F-M and Deltic uniflow engines, but both being OP, there are no valves.
