Actually, Scott, that is not correct. The "50%" figure is thrown around all the time by lots of supposed "experts", however, they could not be more wrong.
In order to obtain the correct divorce rate, you have to take a certain group of married couples and follow them through some period of time, known as "x". After "x" time has transpired, now you can calculate how many of them are still married, and how many of them are divorced. The true number is right around the 35% range.
To get the 50% number, people are incorrectly doing the following: They are saying that "x" number of people got married in 2010, and "x" number of people got divorced in 2010, therefore, the divorce rate is 50%. However, that is not accurate because that does not compare the number of people who got married to the number of those SAME people who got divorced. It's just comparing Group A to Group B, and those are completely different people.
This error is made all the time, and I cringe every time I see it.
