Hi Scott, Unfortunately, that counselor is wrong. She is making the exact same mistake that everyone makes. I had to take a marriage/family class in order to get my degree, and this was one of the more significant things that we spent time on. Many of the studies out there are wrong, because they all compare the wrong groups of people.
The only way to get the accurate numbers is to take a group of specific people. Then, let some time go by (let's say 5 years for sake of discussion). At the end of 5 years, go back to those exact same people and see what their marital status is. THEN we will have the correct divorce rate after 5 years. But to compare random people to another group of completely unassociated random people, the number comes out wrong every time---which is where they get the 50% figure. Just like with most anything in statistics, it can be bent and skewed to display the outcome that we would like it to. I hope the kids at your school are taught this other method.
