It's completely off the topic and totally related, Omaha World Herald this morning had an article
on the solar facility at Ivanpah and the fact that once (if) operating it's output will only
be about 3 to 4 times more expensive than conventional power plants. The connection, Federal money
and with enough political support even something as far fetched as the line over/through the hills
could become a reality. The fly in the ointment becomes the enlarged Panama Canal which would
easily accommodate coal boats and allow Gulf Ports for the export coal. No hills to conquer and
no West Coast issues with which to deal. The Canal work is going to kill at least 30-40 per cent
of cross country IM/stack traffic and three years from now things are going to look a lot different.
