Rollin Roberts search for a "diesel" version of the PE "center cab" electric switchers produced one of the dumbest idea ever for a diesel locomotive, at least from the poor hogheads point of view. That is unless you like sucking in vast amounts of gassy diesel exhaust all night?
These C415's came complete with a dysfunctional bi-directional cab design to match, and a bi-directional cab interior space, where every sharp surface, and all steps were in a blind spot, or around at turn, and set exactly at "shin" height.
Foamers just loved these godawful pieces of useless smoking scrap, and semed to foam with excitment, whenever they saw them. Whenever I showed up and saw one, I cringed, looking around to see, if when I bad ordered them, if there might be a nice SW 1500 around to use?
Probably the only engine worse than this (except for the diesel exhaust in your face all night) was the GE U-50's, which were another dubious "foamer" delight, made famous for an incident one day on the Mountain Local at Old Colton, involving an engineer throwing seats out of the cab window.
