Here are some random memories I have of the Sun Tan Specials:

I believe the SP operated them into the early 1960's.

The consist often included an open end observation car, probably 2901 or 2902. I remember that that the conductor would often keep the platform door locked until the train reached Watsonville Jct. because tree branches and bushes on the Santa Cruz branch would scrape the side of the car and could possibly injure passengers riding on the open platform. Some of the crews didn't seem to care.

There was a band that would play when the train arrived at the Boardwalk. I don't know who they were but if I remember right there were about 20 or 25 musicians and they had matching uniforms. I don't recall seeing them toward the end of the train's operation.

There may have been a section that ran from Oakland to San Jose where it was switched onto the San Francisco section. The Oakland Tribune used to have reserved cars that were used to reward paper carriers for good service, selling subscriptions, etc. I don't know how often this occurred but recall seeing the reserved sign on the car door while making my way to and from the observation car. Perhaps the San Francisco and San Jose papers did the same thing.

I recall riding out of San Jose behind a Daylight painted GS and trading it for a couple smaller steam locomotives at Watsonville Jct. for the trip to Santa Cruz.
