Unfortunately, this was one thing I never spoke with Charlie about. The reason for the broad gauge is that in a 70 mph crosswind, a [BARTD] train traveling at 70 mph won't tip over.

As long as it avoids crossing any of the slip-strike faults under ground. Remember what happened to that tunnel on the SP over the Tehachepis in the 1950s earthquake.
