The problem for South OC and North San Diego Co. the transmission lines have not been up-graded for a long time, the NIMBYs fought SDG&E's plans to upgrade in the late 80's
They can send power all over the place but you can only send so much down a restricted pipe before it chocks or bursts.
Durring the hot summer months San Onofre always had at least one unit running so it balanced the system
Last year (without SONGS) they were lucky, it was hot but not wide spread and mostly on weekends when demand was low, also they had help from two older units at Huntington Beach (that are no longer an option as of today due to stupid smog rules for Natural Gas plants).
If the area has a wide spread heat storm in the beginning or middle of the week, the system in that area cant handle the load for very long and will trip off.
The system needs time to recover or it will fail,
The two new plants (Anaheim and Industry) and on line but are too far away to be of any help.

To those who think I am full of it I guess we just sit back and watch what happens, in the mean time I am getting my low voltage LED lights, fans, TV and scanners ready if/when the power goes off.
