Meltdown or not, it's been an absolute logjam across eastern WA, northern ID, and western MT for the past several weeks. Been pretty routine lately for one of the two main tracks between Athol and Cocolalla, between West and East Algoma, between Otis Orchards and West Hauser, (look 'em up in your AP TT) to be clogged with bumper-to-bumper trains going nowhere. Athol to "Coke" in particular, and darn near every spare piece of second main or siding eastward across Idaho, have been holding westbounds for hours until new crews are available, or a track at Hauser opens up for them. A track-related incident, likely brought on by single digit temps, shut things down for several hours near Granite, Idaho, last night. To put it in the semi-official language being heard daily on the radio, it's a single-track railroad right now.
