The LA Times article mentions the DC - 3 as being built at the Long Beach plant. I recall the DC - 3 as being built in Santa Monica. Did it remain in production long enough to have also been built in Long Beach ???
Regarding the loss of Aerospace jobs in SoCal: This has been happening for many years. My next door neighbor in Villa Park, with 2 PhD's, ended up teaching grade school after being laid off at Douglas. This was in the early 1980's. Orange County was home to many Douglas employees ( it was never referred to as McDonnell - Douglas, even after the buy-out ), as well as a Space division facility in Huntington Beach.
Regarding Boeing, many career Boeing employees here in Puget Sound absolutely HATE the McDonnell - Douglas management that " took over OUR company ". The decision to move corporate headquarters to Chicago was also a big blow to the " Old Boeing family ".
Regarding selling the machinery from the Long Beach plant: Many years ago I tagged along with my dad to the AeroJet plant auction in Fullerton. This was the building on Placentia Ave. that now houses the Home Depot store & distribution center. AeroJet had several HUGE machines that were literally built into the ground floor. Probably sold for scrap, since they would have to be cut apart to remove from the building. Maybe history will repeat itself in Long Beach ???
