a correction or two. First, Milwaukee Road kept the electrics for many years post steam, MUing them w/ the diesels--classic helper district behavior. Conrail is said to junked electrics because Amtrak was overcharging them for the juice. In the merged VGN/N&W case, the issue was directional use of the two separate mainlines.

CA has consistently had the lowest per capita electric usage in the US as we continue to invest in ever more efficient appliances and lights. With the concurrent move to greater reliance on renewable generation, we should be able to increase our substitution of electricity for direct carbon based energy usage--a plug in car chargedfrom solar PV for example.
