From the SFPUC website:
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is the City's municipal power utility. We also provide electrical services to select local residential and business communities. We own and operate the Hetch Hetchy Power System, San Francisco's clean energy backbone and the source of our power. The Hetch Hetchy power network supplies clean energy to all of San Francisco's municipal facilities, services and customers, which includes SFO, SFGH, MUNI, Police, Fire, retail City tenants, residences and businesses in the San Francisco Shipyard, Treasure Island and more.
The Hetch Hetchy Power system is composed of three hydroelectric powerhouses with a combined total hydroelectric output of nearly 400 megawatts. This clean energy is transmitted to San Francisco along City-owned transmission lines that transverse the State of California from east to west. Inside San Francisco, the SFPUC also generates over 10 megawatts of clean, renewable energy from San Francisco's 19 solar arrays and 2 biogas cogeneration facilities.
San Francisco benefits immensely from owning and operating the Hetchy Power System. Our diverse energy portfolio has a zero greenhouse gas emission profile. It does not produce any harmful radioactive byproducts or leave behind any waste. Cost-effective, clean electricity also keeps our environment clean and helps the City's fiscal bottom-line.
We also sell Hetchy energy to the Modesto and Turlock Irrigation Districts. Surplus energy leftover after we've met all of our customers' energy needs is sold on the open market.
