Hydro requires water - a rather variable resource lately in these parts. Much of the country has plenty of water, but no altitudinal differentiation.
With geothermal it is possible to close the steam valve. California is fortunate to have the world's largest amount of it. Most of the country has no such good fortune.
You can't just shut off the steam valve with nuclear. If you drop the rods heat is still produced for days and it has to go somewhere. All those reactors in Japan automatically and safely shut down when the earthquake hit. A half-hour later the external power sources to run the cooling systems all failed and....
