Mook,
I know of few operators that have much evidence of "re-use" of regenerative power from dynamic braking in actual service on LRT. I have an old TRB publication from the 70's that alludes to this purported benefit, but have seen little actual evidence in practice.
I have seen arguments for this theoretical "savings" and heard stories of power (amperage_ supposedly generated by descending power generated DC power on the PE, that purportedly gave a "boost" to ascending trains.
As an economic propositions, I've never heard much of a good argument for this, without significant economies of scale. Max, might have a different insight from one of my favorite rail paradises, from my misspent youth in Zurich, Switzerland, which is essentially one of the most efficient electrified systems in the world, about how much regenerative braking capacity can be captured and effectively used in the electric grid?
