IIRC, the CA Aqueduct systems was originally supposed to generate enough power from Oroville & Thermalito to operate the pumps. Apparently that's no longer the case? Though using overnight power is a good idea too. Also, I think DWR does pumped storage at San Luis when/if there's aqueduct water available for it.
The big Sierra pumped storage is at Wishon & Courtwright Lakes - Helms Creek project. It was part of PG&E's Diablo Canyon project, intended to soak up overnight power from the nuke and deliver it at peak time. I don't think there's any pumped storage in Edison's Big Creek system.
SMUD has been trying to build a pumped-storage arrangement near Placerville. NIMBYs that could (with effort) see it have so far been able to keep it from happening.
