I grew up with annual vacations to Pacific Grove with the destination motels being right near the gates of the Asilomar and next to the tracks. At least one afternoon during the week we would spend time waiting for the train and watching it switch. I am "rescuing" a couple of hideously mis-exposed photos taken with my dad's camera back in the days when they would show up at the end of the line with 2 units and 20-ish cars (a day) for the sand plant and even the lumber yard at Sinex Ave. It was sad as time went watching the train size shrink to just a couple of cars and a single SW unit--then one year, the tracks were rusty and overgrown--then, they were gone. My only regret was not being old enough to have chased the train along the shore near the Monterey wharf and Cannery Row--or to have my dad or uncle drive it for us. I can also remember the Del Monte arriving at the depot near the wharf in the evening with a single SD9 and a couple of cars.
