Thanks for the reply and corrections, John. Your response does pose a couple follow up questions.
1. Golden Gate Railroad Museum told its members in the last several weeks "I’m happy to report that we’ve finalized a storage track plan with NWP and the other stakeholders in the area and have begun construction. Our facilities were part of a much larger development in this area involving other track work and the construction of a warehouse. Working through the requirements has taken some time." I made a rash assumption about the warehouse being for wine.
2. In response to what you said about "NWP never said it was not interested in operating north of Healdsburg", I'd refer you to the following Eureka Times-Standard article from 18 December 2017, the entire text of which was posted to this board on the 19th. The article includes the following quote:
"After the Northwestern Pacific Railroad Company told the California Transportation Commission in June that it had no intention of operating a freight line north of Healdsburg, the authority voted in September to reaffirm its commitment to restore rail lines north of Willits."
Now, we know the media is seldom perfect...but is the newspaper quote in error?
I seem to remember the trash train ending mostly because of a slight cost difference between the local landfill and the Oregon one. Not to say there wasn't political stuff going on in the background, but that's what I remember in the media at the time.
Also, it should be noted California Northern did not leave the south end of the NWP by choice, they left because SP sold the line out from underneath them and the new owner elected to run the line themselves. All accounts seem to suggest CFNR was happy to not have that part of the operation anymore, as it accounted for the vast majority of their m-o-w budget.
