BN's ARES System (Advanced Railroad Electronics System) was extremely expensive and very limited in scope of what it could do in its time. It would not have worked in a universal application as per PTC's mandate. For example, the accuracy of the GPS locator was +/- 100 feet, which made it unsuitable for situations such as multiple main tracks.

The system was developed mostly by Rockwell and while it was a good start on the technology, the system as it was did not meet the FRA required standards for PTC.
