I think ACE has their engineers work as conductors too. Don't know how they alternate the two roles, but pretty sure they do.

On ACE they have to run in the morning, lay over in a hotel, and return that night. Sounds sort of boring.

SMART was said to be hiring some conductors only to fill out the ranks. It could be that some of the engineers are getting to simply run trains instead of having to switch off with the other crew member. But I am certain the original conception is that the engineers and conductors would alternate jobs during the course of the day.

Caltrain engineers just run trains.
