H=head E=end P=power. It's self-explanatory. If the generator itn't on the "head end", then it's " power". Back in the days when each car carried its own generator (axle, Waukesha, or diesel) it wasn't called "head end". However, there was just such a system available in the late 1800s (generator in baggage car), and it was also called "head-end".

Would you rather spend several thousand more dollars per car just so you don't have to shut down the [loco] HEP to disconnect part of the train. You're pretty clueless.
