Actually, compact generators of the size needed for most cars wouldn't be that expensive. I imagine 15kw or 20kw would be enough for any car except the diner, and are quite small. Cost would be somewhere between 5 and 10 grand per car. Of course, they would to be kept very quiet. Certainly, at these probable numbers, the benefits of modular self contained power justifies some serious study.
And yes, the metal thieves would be a huge problem on a flat or well car, or any place the wiring is exposed. But if we are to ever achieve electro-pneumatic braking, the cars must be wired anyhow. And I understand that double stacks and captive unit trains will be the first candidates. We will have to solve that problem anyway - somehow.
Now there's a subject that fascinates me. The potential benefits of electro-pneumatic braking are indeed enormous. They will allow significant improvement in braking distances, and greatly improve train handling and reliability. With much shorter stopping distances, signals could then be placed closer (or supplemented with cab signals); sharply increasing the capacity of existing track.
Now, does anyone know just what technologies and configuration the A.A.R. is planning?
