There are other cheaper additives than MBTE, and like gasoline itself, can, if not properly contained, can a will also contaminate the environment. Electric vehicles are a good answer, but also come with battery disposal problems... As Rosanna Rosannadanna used to say: "It's always something"... But, we have about 25% of the current light duty fleet that could today, based on maximum daily mileage, that could easily be economically replaced by electric vehicles, especially based fleet vehicles like pick up trucks and utility vans, if there were only such vehicles on the market.

After all, I did ultimately end up working for more Reps. than Dems. who tended to blind themselves to the "facts" that their adherents didn't want to hear, as much as anyone on the loony fringe of the right that I've seen. Whereas, most of the "mainstream" Reps. I worked for just wanted to know, is it a "real problem", what is the "evidence", and how serious is it? And, if it is something serious, and we have to do something about it, they generally wanted to know what is the cheapest and least intrusive way we can deal with it.
