The North Coast Railroad Authority board has approved contracts to have rails and bridges repaired on 62 miles of track, including in Novato, so that freight service can resume by this fall.
Contracts totalling more than $12 million are for repairing of lines between Lombard in Napa County and Windsor in Sonoma County. The NCRA intends to complete the projects in four or five months and have trains carrying freight such as feed for farm animals, building materials, wood products and cases of wine through Novato.
The city of Novato settled a lawsuit with the NCRA over provisions of the freight deal in October. Trains will run through Novato at approximately 40 mph on no more than six one-way trips per week during daytime hours only. The same tracks eventually will be used by Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit passenger trains
