I was the meteorologist for Dillingham-Tokla when they replaced the entire roadway on the Golden Gate Bridge in the mid 1980's. The Chief Engineer I worked with said that the new Arthropodic deck they put it was half the weight of the original deck and the the GG Bridge could easily accommodate light or heavy rail below the roadway. Most of the structure needed for this was built in the late 1950's to stabilize the bridge from 100 mph winds. As it now, surveys show only 17% of SMART riders will go to the City for work and they take the ferry and buses to get there.
