An steam era SP hogger who used to work the Richmond Belt job told me that the reason so many of these old design Moguls lasted up to the end of SP steam was because of their 63" drivers...dispatchers liked 'em cause they could make track speed on the mainline when they had to keep off of other trains times. As for pullers, they weren't much better than the modern Atlantics with t.e.'s in the low 30's IIRC.
