Re: Moguls as pullers

Rich, I'm gonna stick with what I said earlier on this issue. Everything mechanically is a compromise...1744 shines for that first hours run East out of Alamosa on the flat and can do 40
without beating herself up, but does not pull nearly as well as 18 on the long grade.
Think of how and where Moguls were utilized on the SP in steam days. While Consolidations were often used as point helpers out of Dunsmuir and Roseville, the same was not true for the Moguls. You shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but I have always felt that the Mogul
in Dunsmuir was a poor choice for a display locomotive as she really did not express what was used there. A Consolidation would have been a much better choice.
SP modern Atlantic...about 29,000 lbs t.e.
SP Mogul.............about 33,000 lbs.t.e.
SP Ten Wheeler.......about 38,000 lbs.t.e.
SP Consolidation.....about 45,000 lbs.t.e. (this after the "bump" to 210 lbs.)
SP heavy Pacific.....about 45,000 lbs.t.e.
SP Mikado............all around 53,000 lbs. t.e. EXCEPT for the former EP&SW machines
which were right around 60,000 lbs.
SP F-1 light Deck....about 65,000 lbs. t.e.
SP heavy Deck........about 75,000 lbs. t.e.
SP 4-10-2............about 84,000 lbs. t.e. (plus booster)

I rounded all these off and am quoting from memory here, so realize that I have left myself open! Did not include the 2-8-4 (because they were out on this end for such a short time) and
the bigger power like 4-8-2, 4-8-4 and the articulateds.
SP never realy developed the Mikado like a lot of roads did. As built, manuy started out at 180 lbs. on the boiler, got a first "bump" in pressure to 200 lbs. and then another to 210 lbs.
This 210 lb. figure was also seen on most of the 2-8-0's, but not at all on the 2-10-2 types.
