Just read an
interesting piece in SFGate about Hwy 37 across the marshes, and the big project to reconstruct it on a high enough causeway to resist flooding by sea level rise in the near future (would be closed by 2040 without it).
Leads me to wonder if SMART has any similar studies going on for the segments along 37, 121, and in the marshes south of and through Schellville (Schellville will be underwater by 2050 too). And the many other segments that are essentially at sea level around Petaluma, Novato, and into San Rafael. If they plan to keep operating freight, they probably need to do something about the altitude of the rails. And if they plan to keep operating at all for more than anothe 10-20 years, they need to do something about it. BCDC and other agencies have supported such studies; has SMART taken part in them?
Yes, that does mean that the existing railroad has a limited life expectancy in its present location. Nature has a vote, even though she's not registered.
