844/3985 questions

Back in the day, UP often ran 844 and/or 3985 without diesels. Now, they almost never do.

Is this for protection in case of breakdown? For assist on grades or with heavy trains (Frontier Days) so that they don't plug up the line for too long? Or is it just because they don't want to put that much load on the old steamers?

When they're out on the line (let's say in the flats, without too heavy a train), how much work is the diesel doing?
