There's the famous incident with the Challenger in the "Big Bore" on Donner where they did exactly that - throttled back 3985, let the diesel provide power through the tunnel. Which was fine...

... until the diesel died.

So the steam crew reacted by, first, breaking out the emergency oxygen, and second, opening the throttle on the Challenger and yanking themselves (and the diesel) out of the tunnel.
