The use of a diesel for dynamic braking on long, steep, or long and steep downgrades should be self explanatory.

For those who don't get it, either Trains or Railroad (I forget which) had a color photo a year or so ago of a WP steam powered passenger train going down the FRC. Enshrouded in a huge cloud of brake shoe smoke, of course.
