Rode Golden Gate Transit to work for 30 years and Muni for 10 before that. Ridden many a bus and streetcar.
Corte Madera ripped up and paved over the ROW in its jurisdiction. Apparently they laid a sewer on it too. Larkspur wasn't happy about losing parking on the track area south of the tunnel. Caltrans would have certainly gotten eventual possession of the tunnel as part of the perennial widening of 101, with the total collusion of Larkspur and San Rafael, if if hadn't been for the intervention of SMART.
The Northbay commute to San Francisco has been in decline for years and half of the commute to Marin is trucks and people taking their kids to school. Buses represent default public transit throughout the US, especially if they contract out to get a cheap union. That's just the way it is.
