If you would read more carefully, I said single carload shippers, not Cemex were chased away. That practice was common all over the SP and now the UP. They simply have no interest in smalltime railroading. Davenport is the only reason the SP/UP has held on to this branch so long. Beside that, Cemex, when it used to be RMC, used natural gas until it became cost-prohibitive. Knowing that SC is an environmental community, it could only have been a matter of time before coal combustion artifacts would become a contamination issue. It makes me wonder why there was no soda ash to market. I'm only speculating, but there may arise another ownership for the Davenport facility, but probably not until the cement market recovers. As I said in the initial post, the facility might also be able to be converted to an aggregate source, or be retrofitted back to gas. Olympia and Wilder produced many thousands of tons of outbound sand over the years. Some of my finest cab-rides were on this branch.
