No economy is going to collapse from $10 per gallon gas or diesel. Just the trucking, bussing and airline companies who will get what they deserve. All it will do is force a change-right onto rails. The national economy may shrink and force our society to rely more on local manufacturing, growing of food and living. That's not a bad thing. The only thing we will lose in the long term is our current unsustainable lifestyles. In Europe, gas and diesel has been at $8-$10 per gallon for a long time and their economy is doing better than ours. has been for a while. I can think of worse things than a return to intercity railroading with spurs and branches off the mainlines tapping into cities. Trucks are useless for anything other than overnight deliveries or a bunch of local deliveries.
