Truckers parked their rigs after $3.50 per gallon? Sounds pretty useless to me. As I said imagine the impact European style fuel prices will have on the trucking industry in this country (which are on the way as everybody is stating). The reason trucking is so prevalent is because trucks get to use our roads and highways essentially for free.
As far as railroads ripping out spurs and branches, a large part of that is due to businesses switching to trucks, simply because trucks were slightly cheaper due to rock bottom fuel prices. It won't happen overnight, and there will likely be public investment and incentives and such, but it will make more sense. Who says the major railroads have to operate the switching?
