John makes some good points.

Meanwhile, the Sierra Northern seems to be drumming up customers on the Santa Cruz line where Union Pacific couldn't or (more likely) didn't care to... The same will probably be true on the NWP, where there currently is no service, and none of the lineside customers are willing make any solid commitments. That could change once there's motive power and crews on call, and then rail service may well become attractive to shippers on the fence as well as those who hadn't previously had the option.

The naysayers could be right, no customer base to pay the bills, but I guess we'll see when (if ever) we get there.
