Backup moves on the Monterey Branch

I ran across this picture of the SP 2476 with its backup pilot while stored on the deadline at Bayshore in 1958.

Since there are some knowledgeable folks from that area who post on this board, here is a historical question. If I remember correctly this engine and a sister were used on the Del Monte, and because there was no turning facility at Pacific Grove or Monterey they had to back up out of town. I'm wondering if they backedup all the way to Castroville, if they turned on the loop at Ord, or perhaps even ran backwards to Watsonville Junction.

The other possible use I can think of for this backup pilot might have been the commute operation on the Los Gatos branch.
