Due to the lack of freight traffic, SP applied to the ICC to abandon 6.70 miles of track from Seaside to Asilomar MP 130.0 on December 28,1978. The ICC ruled favorably for the SP and the abandment was made effective May 5,1979. The tracks sat dormant and the railroad began taking bids in 1984 for the removal of rails and ties to the end of branch at Lake Majella MP 130.3.
